How to Understand and Evaluate a Diamond

There is a rule called the 4 "C" (in English: Carat, Clarity, Color, Cut)

CARAT (CARAT)

All gemstones have a weight, a size, the diamond is expressed in carats.

Curiosities of Carat is an ancient unit of measurement based on the use of traditional seeds of the carob tree

for weighing precious metals, very common practice in the bazaars of the Middle East and Asia. The use of the seeds of the carob tree as a criterion for this assessment was linked to the ancient belief that they were very uniform in size and weight.

In the twentieth century the weight of the carat was made standard and defined come1 / 5 of a gram. The carat is equal to 0.2 grams, ie 200 milligrams, and also corresponds to 100 points. Example: a 0.25 carat stone is a stone by 25 points or 1/4 of a carat.

The symbol for carat is ct, kt or k. The carat is the weight of a diamond then determines the cost. The heavier stones are large, usually more rare and more difficult to find, eg a diamond of 3 carats worth much more than the sum of three diamonds of 1 carat. So the higher the carat weight of a diamond, the more valuable it is. The only case in which the combined weight of the gems may have smaller value than that of a single gem of equal caliber is when the cost of work to cut all the little gems becomes important and therefore more expensive.

COLOR (COLOR)

The scale used to determine the color of a diamond ranges from D (BEST) TO THE LETTER Z (WORST):

D: Indicates Exceptional White + Extras

E: Indicates White Extra Exceptional

F: Indicates White + Extras

G: indicates color BiancoExtra

H: Indicates White

I / J: Indicates White Gradient

K / L: Indicates White Slightly Complexion

M / Z: Yellow indicates Tinto

PURITY (CLARITY)

The degree of purity of a diamond is determined by the size of the impurities included in the stone:

FL: (FLAWLESS) indicates no inclusion inside or outside of any kind visible under 10x magnification by a trained eye. It is the maximum level of purity, corresponding to

IF: (Internally Flawless) indicates a pure stone.

VVS1 / VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included) indicates a stone with small impurities visible with a lens of 10 magnifications.

VS1 / VS2 (Very Slightly Included) indicates a stone with small impurities visible to the lens of 10 magnifications.

SI 1 / SI 2 (Slightly Included) indicates a stone with visible impurities to the lens of 10 magnifications.

P1 / P2 / P3 (Included 1 - 2 - 3) shows a stone with impurities visible to the naked eye

CUTTING: diamonds can be cut into different shapes, putting more emphasis on the quality and the brightness of the stone.

The most used and appreciated is the round cut or brilliant, hence the common name "brilliant" used to denote the round diamonds: there is therefore no difference between "diamond" and "brilliant."

Other forms of cut used are the "heart" 's "oval", the "shuttles" and "drop".
